Association Gabriele Marveggio

We promote science education at the high school level in the region of Sondrio, Italy.
We organize science outreach events and run the yearly Conference "Gabriele Marveggio".

This page gives a short presentation of our activity for non-Italian speakers. For further information see the full version of our website in Italian.

The association is named in memory of Gabriele Marveggio, who was an extraordinary science teacher in the Sondrio area.

The conference Gabriele Marveggio is an annual event that offers students from Valtellina a place to discuss various topics related to the world of science and to life in our valley. In the spirit of Gabriele, students are encouraged to take an active role in their education and to explore beyond the boundaries of their school program. Each year, the conference is an opportunity to discuss a new science theme, within which students are invited to develop, from start to end, a science outreach project on a topic of their choice. Students then share their work with their peers during a one-day conference, alongside talks by scientists and professionals. The conference is also an opportunity to expose the students to the world of science in academia and in industry, and to higher education in general.

The first conference took place in April 2014. Since then we had the chance to discuss a broad range of topics, from classical physics and chemistry (the origin of electricity, the many aspects of water, the multiple facets of light) to modern physics and mathematics (quantum physics, probability theory). The universe of possible themes has no boundaries!

Over the years, students from seven different high schools participated to the conference, and invited speakers came from a broad selection of institutions and companies (Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (FR), Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica, Università degli Studi di Pavia, Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, Politecnico di Milano, Bissi Holding, Tessuti di Sondrio, URS Italia). Past editions of the conference typically hosted about 400 students.

Please see below for further information on the current edition.

We thank all past participants for their contributions and our sponsors (listed on each individual conference page) for their support.
